Our library is at the heart of the academy; a study space that also encourages a life-long reading habit. Located on the first floor, it is a huge welcoming space staffed by an enthusiastic, knowledgeable Librarian, with support from volunteer student Library Assistants.
The library is open 08:00 - 16:00 each week day, except Friday when it closes at 14:00. Students are encouraged to visit the library before school, during breaks and afterschool. Sixth Formers may also use the library for independent study.
Home to over 10,000 printed titles; including classics and contemporary fiction to suit every taste, non-fiction and text and revision books to support learning, and computers that may be used for school work. It is a calm environment where a student may read and reflect, practice research skills and do homework, join a lunchtime club or learn to play chess.
Students and staff may borrow fiction books for up to 2 weeks which also teaches time-keeping, responsibility and consequence; as lost or damaged books must be paid for! Course books are borrowed for the academic year. Working in partnership with students, parents and teachers to promote an enjoyment of reading, and to encourage students to keep exploring new opportunities through Suggested Reading Lists.
Library events are promoted within school and also @LeaValleyTweets; for example notable calendar days and festivals such as Roald Dahl Day, Holocaust Memorial Day, Spooky Tales, Black History Month and World Book Day. The library regularly collaborates with departments; offering lesson space, providing library session on presentation and research skills, copyright and plagiarism.
Lea Valley Academy recognises that Reading for Pleasure has a significant effect on student achievement, books are of huge importance to young people’s development academically and socially and that 16-year-olds who choose to read for pleasure outside of school are more likely to secure more fulfilling jobs. And it's fun, so get reading!
